Nebras Zero-knowledge Proof Aggregator Goes Live On Ethereum Mainnet

Aligned is partnering with these interoperability-focused projects to make this a reality by eliminating the ZK proof verification bottleneck. Fast transaction finality and low costs are essential for providing the cross-chain UX needed for mass adoption of crypto. Users can synchronously send messages and move funds across rollups that use the NodeKit shared sequencer within a single 2-second block. Union is a hyper-efficient modular interoperability layer for general message passing, asset transfers, NFTs, and DeFi. Zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs are a powerful tool for enabling cross-chain interoperability, and have already gained adoption by enabling the proliferation of ZK-rollups.

Zero-knowledge technology, a way of verifying without revealing information, is used across the blockchain sector — in places like zkVM, zkRollups and zk coprocessors. This project is based on the Polygon zkEVM network, which is designed to bring scalability to Ethereum-compatible blockchains. In the state synchronization process discussed above (step 1-5), along with sync hash, the ETH will be transferred to the primary chain, and finally locked in the zkLink contract on primary chain. ZkLink Nova applies zkLink Nexus technology, which allows users to deposit ETH from and withdraw ETH to any connected network powered by fund auto-rebalancing. This additional layer ensures that the data relayed to the primary chain in real-time is consistent with the sync hashes periodically transmitted via the canonical rollup message service. For example, a bad sequencer may falsely inform the primary chain about a fake deposit on one secondary chain that does not exist. Please note that only the sequencer is authorized to relay transactions from the secondary chains to the primary chain. The sequencer monitors the transactions received in the zkLink contract on the primary chain and forwards these transactions (in step 4) to the Nova network (L3) for execution.

This layered approach ensures that zkEVM remains efficient, secure, and transparent, setting a new standard for Layer 2 scaling solutions. By using zero-knowledge proofs, Polygon zkEVM achieves high scalability without sacrificing security, allowing it to handle a massive number of transactions while maintaining the integrity of every state change. By leveraging this technology, Polygon zkEVM ensures the fast validation of off-chain transactions, reducing costs and congestion on the Ethereum network. Polygon zkEVM is reshaping the landscape of Ethereum scalability, introducing a Layer 2 solution that balances speed, security, and cost-efficiency.

Over the next five years, this principle will drive the design of truly trustless bridges and modular blockchain architectures, shifting the focus from simply passing data between chains to passing cryptographically guaranteed state validity. This differs fundamentally from previous approaches by replacing linear-time block header verification with constant-time proof verification. The core mechanism is a universal verifiable transfer protocol that separates the sidechain’s internal logic from its cross-chain security layer. This presented a core limitation → the trilemma of achieving decentralization, low verification cost, and universal compatibility simultaneously, forcing systems to compromise on trust or scalability. Foresight Ventures invests in other companies in the crypto space.

The use of recursive zero-knowledge proofs establishes the cryptographic foundation for truly decentralized, universally compatible, and scalable blockchain interoperability. This certificate is then posted to the mainchain, which verifies the single, succinct proof, guaranteeing the sidechain’s state validity without needing to re-execute or inspect any transactions. This recursive composition compresses the entire history of the sidechain into a single, small, constant-size cryptographic certificate. The sidechain’s block production process is modified to include a recursive proof generation step → a zk-SNARK is used to prove the validity of the current block and the validity of the previous block’s zk-SNARK proof. This research proposes Zendoo, a protocol leveraging recursive composition of zk-SNARKs to generate a single, succinct cryptographic certificate that attests to the entire history and state progression of a sidechain. The Zendoo protocol uses recursive zk-SNARKs to generate succinct, constant-size proofs of sidechain state, fundamentally securing decentralized interoperability. The Block continues to operate independently to deliver objective, impactful, and timely information about the crypto industry. By combining various ZK proofs looking to settle their batched data onchain, the NEBRA aggregator can reduce costs by up to 10 times less than had something like a ZK rollup been verified alone, a NEBRA spokesperson told The Block.

To do so, it fetches the batches sequencced by the sequencer, and interacts with the provers to generate the ZeroKnowledge Proofs (ZKPs). After transaction hash verification and ZKP verification, withdrawal request to the primary chain Linea can be executed. As zkLink Nova connects to Optimistic rollups like Optimism and Arbitrum, it takes around 7 days to forward transaction hashes to the primary chain via canonical rollup bridge to finish the verification. As discussed above, to prevent deposit fraud problem, all on-chain transactions prior to a withdrawal request have to be verified via sync hash consistency check. As ERC-20 tokens may only exist on a Layer 2 network, which is not bridgeable back to Ethereum via rollup bridge, to make it consistent, an ERC-20 token will be locked in the ERC-20 bridge on the chain where it comes from (see the figure below). When users deposits ETH from a secondary Chain onto Nova, it will be temporally locked in the zkLink contract on the source chain. The Trusted Sequencer: Ensuring Transaction Order And Execution

In the context of blockchain transactions, sidechains can reduce the computing and storage resources necessary to validate a block of transactions once published to the mainchain. Across the blockchain ecosystem, several projects are integrating rollup infrastructure with sidechains to create secure, privacy-preserving protocols. The term "rollup" refers to the process of rolling transactions into a single block before publishing the validated transactions to the mainchain. By implementing rollups, this number can reach adrian games up to 1,000 TPS, as only critical smart contract data is communicated back to the mainchain and the majority of data remains on the sidechain. In response to this challenge, companies have begun to explore scalability solutions like Optimistic Rollups (ORs) and Zero-Knowledge Rollups (zk-Rollups). Reach out to us if you want to explore how we can build a more secure and provable internet together.

In other words, the sidechain has already verified each transaction, so transactions are automatically valid on the mainchain. The pursuit of scalability and privacy continues to drive rollup integrations, which also facilitate other cryptographic processes such as Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC). Rollups can move computationally intensive processes to a sidechain to ease congestion on the mainchain while stabilizing network fees and transaction speeds. Additionally, the sequencer helps achieve near-instant transaction finality on the zkEVM chain by allowing transactions to be processed quickly before full L1 verification. The sequencer's ability to interact with L1 helps maintain consistency and security between the two layers, providing users with an efficient and low-cost transaction environment. ZkLink Nova is powered by zkLink Nexus technology for multi-chain settlement. Collectively, these tools allow Arbitrum Rollup users to deploy smart contracts at a fraction of the cost without sacrificing security or decentralization. Like zk-Rollups, ORs are a Layer-2 solution that runs parallel to the Ethereum mainchain. While zk-Rollups have become fairly common, many projects have also begun to explore the use of on blockchain networks. These markets integrate reverse auction elements and continuous liquidity to establish token market prices through participation. Like many other protocols, user assets are held in a mainchain smart contract until valid proof is published. Through the use of zk-Rollups, Immutable X moves thousands of transactions off the mainchain and publishes the resulting proof to the mainchain, where a smart contract verifies transactions. The Immutable X team built its protocol to optimize minting and trading Ethereum-based NFTs.

Definition ∞ Zero-knowledge proofs are cryptographic methods that allow one party to prove to another that a statement is true, without revealing any information beyond the validity of the statement itself. Definition ∞ Verification is the process of confirming the truth, accuracy, or validity of information or claims. Further research will focus on reducing the computational overhead of the recursive prover to democratize sidechain creation and maintenance.
